Japanese restaurant and sushi bar designed in a country style of dark wood and a slightly rustic look.
Tables and benches were custom designed.
General Contractor: S. Handa Sons
This is a project I was involved with while employed with another firm. I've included this because this project has special meaning to me.
My father and uncle were part owners of the building as well as the general contractor, and my brother was the foreman carpenter.
Located on a cobble stone plaza in Japantown which is one of only three Japantowns in the entire United States.
Most buildings in Japantown take on a faux Japanese design to appeal to tourists. We took a different approach and chose to design a more contemporary Japanese design. The eventual tenants (a Japanese restaurant upstairs and a retail store at the plaza level) for whom we were also the architect, chose this building because they said it looked more like a building in Japan than other buildings in Japantown.
It was published several times by the local Japanese newspaper and won an AIA design award.
